Introduction

Introduction
Today`s roads, together with historical paths and tracks, form part of our cultural heritage due to their role in shaping the territory. At the same time, the planning and design of new roads should be carried out in accordance with the cultural, environmental and landscape values of the territory.

This two-sided relationship between roads and the land generates conflicts that modify projects and delay their execution, and the coordination between the different authorities in these projects should be supported by good planning and design.

The objective of this 1st Congress is to discuss this issue that affects our profession. We would like it to be a congress with active participation, not only by civil engineers and government representatives or professionals related to reads, but also those concerned with cultural heritage and land use planning and environment. For this reason, the Congress has been structured in four work groups.

We therefore encourage you to present papers and to collaborate in the organisation of the Congress. The Colegio de Ingenieros, Canales y Puertos de Galicia (Institution of Civil Engineers of Galicia), the Demarcación de Carreteras del Estado en Galicia and the Department of Public Works of the Xunta de Galicia, merely wish to act as intermediaries in a congress in which we would like participants from all fields to attend and could lead to successive editions being held in other Autonomous Regions.
